Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of war…

Last weeksaw the passing into law of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act.  The undemocratic progress of this pernicious bill, which will undoubtedly undermine not just family, but the whole structure of society as we know it, has been scandalous, and many Christians have been left feeling not just defeated, but unheeded, unregarded and demoralised.  Even worse, some have been left feeling God has gone on sabbatical … or never existed.  Or has even simply changed His mind and decided to smile fondly on what was once categorised as ‘sin’; in which case, the argument runs, we’d all better hurry up and follow suit, or get left behind.

Can any of this be right?  No, it’s not.  It is deception. 

Whatever we try and maintain, the snake is still slithering round the garden, and men and women are still listening.  Yet for all the arguments of aggressive secularists and progressive churchmen, the truth is that God has not decided to ‘get modern’ and bless prohibited behaviours.  Neither has He failed to notice what’s going on, or simply become too enfeebled to act.   No, He sees it all, and the redefinition of sin to extol any and all sexual behaviours, accommodating lifestyles prohibited in the Bible, is a ploy straight from the devil, designed to destroy Christianity and the values which have governed our society since its institution.   It is a direct challenge to God Himself.  So why has He allowed it?

VfJUK suggests that the answer is actually quite simple.  If this bill had been defeated, we would have congratulated ourselves on a battle well fought … but nothing would have changed and, not to put too fine a point on it, the greater mass of humanity would have continued unchecked on the road to hell.    The erosion of sexual values would have continued unabated.  STIs, increasingly untreatable, would have continued to rise, decimating the lives of young and old alike; and without moral protection and guidance, our children would have been left increasingly vulnerable … because no one would have told them anything different. 

This is our wake-up call.  It is not the time to give up – indeed, this is the moment when the real battle begins.  The fight for same sex marriage was never just to establish homosexual ‘equality’.  Rather it was an attack by evil on the things of God – a challenge to His power, with the objective of destroying both Christianity, and the moral frame that forms the basis of society.  And because the challenge is to God, God Himself will fight. 

So this is our Dunkirk moment.  We have undeniably suffered a reverse – and let’s acknowledge that bravely.   But it is not the end.   The plain fact is that Christians have been asleep, and we have failed to defend our faith.   In fact, this victory has been enabled by our naïve complacency extending back some fifty years, which has allowed the enemy to creep up on us unawares, peddling poison with weasel words of fairness, inclusivity and love.

God has not abandoned us, or let us down.  Two thousand years ago Christ died to set us free, only now the enemy has taken advantage of our complacency to once again pour darkness into the world.  The future of humanity is under threat, but the devil’s apparent victories only mean that judgement draws close.  Yet God’s will remains to save, to snatch the lost from the fires of hell.  This is the battle to which we are called.  This is why we must now stand for our faith.  This is where the Lord will bless us.
