Hypocrisy!

Piers Morgan, writing in the Mail on Sunday, has called Megan Markle ‘a whiny, privileged hypocrite’, once again accusing her of lying in the recent, much-hyped, interview with Oprah Winfrey.  But he has gone farther, saying that criticism of his earlier comments is an attack on democracy and freedom of speech, and that it is time for the cancellation of cancel culture… before it cancels our culture.  He writes,
“… it’s about a far bigger issue than one delusional duchess, and that’s everyone’s right to be free to express our honestly held opinions, forcefully and passionately if we feel like it” (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9409927/PIERS-MORGAN-REAL-truth-Writing-time-dramatic-exit-GMB.html).

Well, thank you, Piers, for championing free speech!  Highly commendable – but could our attention-grabbing presenter perhaps explain more fully the parameters to the freedoms he claims so vehemently to defend?  Could he explain, for example, why those offering reparative/talking therapies to people unhappy with their sexual orientation have to be silenced and shut down?  Should they not also be allowed freedom?

In a 2017 interview on Good Morning Britain with Dr Mike Davidson, a therapist offering counselling to people unhappy with their sexual orientation, and who – and this is the important bit – have gone to him for help, Morgan ranted, “We call (people like you) horrible little bigots in the modern world. Bigoted people who talk complete claptrap and, in my view, a malevolent and dangerous part of our society” (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-41174360).  And he ended the interview by shouting, “Shut up, you old bigot! (https://www.facebook.com/itvnews/videos/piers-morgan-in-angry-row-with-gay-conversion-doctor/10155155724752672/).

What had provoked such ire?  Simple.  Dr Davidson had apparently expressed the view that people aren’t ‘born’ gay, but will have been affected by experiences and circumstance and, should they wish, can be helped to change.  But to LGBT+ snowflakes and their supporters, such views are seemingly disgusting and detestable, and cannot be allowed; such people must not make this choice!  Hence Piers Morgan’s tirade, and on this occasion he was swimming with the tide.

Perhaps one should say ‘flood’, because under pressure from LGBTQ+ activists and campaigners, who put up a petition that attracted no less than 256,392 signatures, the Government has now pledged to make conversion therapy illegal (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-56284422).  Boris Johnson has even waded into the fray, calling such therapies ‘repulsive’ and ‘abhorrent’ (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/03/12/boris-johnson-will-end-repulsive-conversion-therapy/ ).  And these measures, shortly to become law if plans go ahead, will criminalise not just the offer of therapy, but quite possibly offers of prayer and pastoral support from ministers of religion!

This is blatant hypocrisy, attacking the ancient freedoms on which our society is founded.

The truth is that some people, unhappy with same sex attraction, can and do change when given the right support, and that is without any element of coercion or force.  The days of electro-convulsive treatment are thankfully long gone, and therapies these days are largely simply ‘listening’.  And, despite what LGBT campaigners claim, there is growing evidence of desperate people who have been helped in this way.  A quick look at Dr Davidson’s website (https://www.core-issues.org), for instance, is an eye-opener.

So where is the justice in denying people in distress the right to seek help?  How is it right to deny them support?  Indeed, why should ‘support’ be limited to helping them enter more fully into an identity they reject and that makes them unhappy?  Why is changing orientation not just good, but actively celebrated, only if it goes one way?  And in a society that supposedly respects and upholds freedom of belief, why are certain key articles of faith being so viciously suppressed?  Why are believers branded hate-filled bigots merely for expressing their faith, which labels such behaviours sin?

However dressed up, this is not LGBT equality.  It is LGBT intimidation and tyranny, aimed at the complete suppression of any and all views that might cast doubt on the new Weltanschauung.

Piers Morgan says it is unacceptable that people daring to criticise Megan Markle should be branded ‘racist’.   Equally, it is unacceptable for people offering help to those suffering from confused sexuality to be branded ‘bigots’.

If the LGBT community is as confident in their identities and life-style choices as they maintain, then they shouldn’t fear the deeply held beliefs of those of faith, and they definitely shouldn’t try and close down avenues of help, offered to those in clear distress.

Yes, we need urgently to protect freedom of speech in this country, and Piers Morgan should be free to express views without being hounded and threatened in the way he has.  But people unhappy with their sexual orientation and people of faith deserve equal respect and protection, and must be allowed freedom of speech too.  Otherwise democracy is dead.

It is surely time to end the hypocrisy of minority groups attempting to impose their views on the rest of society.    Those unhappy with their sexual orientation, wanting a conventional family with a partner of the opposite sex and their own biological children, must be allowed to seek help to change.  And those offering counselling and support must be allowed freedom to provide the help that is sought.   Equally, believers must be free to follow and express, without fear of intimidation or reprisal, their faith.
