Same-sex marriage – it’s not a done deal!

On March 5th we held our first briefing meeting in the House of Lords on same sex marriage. Hosted by Lord Cormack, speakers included Dr Michael Langrish, Bishop of Exeter; Professor John Finnis FBA, Professor of Law and Legal Philosophy Emeritus, University of Oxford; R.S.Harris, author of the book, Is there a case for same-sex marriage?  Questions of eligibility and consequences; and Revd Lynda Rose, CEO of VfJUK.

Around twenty Peers attended, and interest was high.  The Bill is expected for debate in the Lords towards the end of May, after its third reading in the Commons.   In order to help their Lordships and fuel discussion, we are intending to send a copy of the talks to all peers, and there are plans for another briefing meeting prior to the debate towards the end of May.

We are also pleased to report that our formal submission to the House of Commons’ committee considering the Bill was accepted as evidence and circulated to all members of Committee.  A summary of the submission can be read on the News section of our website, while the full text can be found on the Parliamentary website at:

Whatever the media reports, there is still all to play for!  Since the beginning of history, marriage – the lifelong and exclusive union between one man and one woman – has been the bedrock of society.  For the simple reason that it works.  The attempt now to redefine marriage is not about fairness or equality for those of the same sex who love each other, but is a direct attack on the values and religious liberties of those who uphold the traditional structures underpinning the family and society.  Civil partnerships already exist for same sex couples who want to make a public commitment to each other, so why then is there a need to redefine marriage in such a way as will undoubtedly destroy it, and put children at risk?
