The Mayflower Project – Does religious persecution exist in Britain today?

Debate Postponed

Despite current government encouragement to carry on ‘as normal’, in view of the worsening situation around the spread of the coronavirus, and rather than expose people unnecessarily to risk of infection, we have reluctantly taken the decision to postpone the debate scheduled for Thursday, 12th March until such time as it is deemed safe.

Thank you to all those who have purchased tickets.  You will be fully reimbursed and we hope we may see you later in the year, when conditions have returned to normal.

About the event

In September 1620, a group of English Puritans, branded traitors and hounded for their Separatist beliefs by King James and Parliament, set sail from Plymouth. They were heading for the Americas, known at the time as the New World, and their intention was to establish a colony where they could practise their belief without fear of persecution. The ship they sailed on was the Mayflower.

To mark the 400th anniversary of their momentous voyage, Voice for Justice UK is planning a year-long series of events to celebrate their fight for religious freedom and the right to express their beliefs, without intimidation and free from persecution.

Four speakers, tackling four different areas, will give their views on the reality of freedom in the UK today.Historian and film maker Philip Quenby will explain why the Pilgrim Fathers felt compelled to embark on such a hazardous journey, and the impact of their legacy on both the US and UK. Renowned Jewish scholar Professor Geoffrey Alderman will examine the place of the Jewish community in Britain today, looking especially at education and ever-increasing reports of anti-Semitism. Former BBC journalist and writer Robin Aitken will examine evidence of bias in the media. And finally, human rights barrister Paul Diamond will talk about some of the high profile cases he’s been involved in, and changing attitudes within the judiciary. Are we seeing a resurgence of persecution in the UK today? What does free speech really mean?

We shall be filming the event before a small studio audience, so space is limited and seats will be allocated on a strictly first come, first served basis. To have your chance to ask questions of the panel and to avoid disappointment, book today!
